I have to admit that in the beginning of this school year I wasn´t entirely sure what "register" means. Then we spoke about it in class a lot, and now I just did all the excercises concerning register, that were uploaded online by our teachers as a practice for our third English test.
I realise now that is is very important to distinguish between formal and informal language. At this point it is not only important to speak and write grammaticaly correct English, but also to understand what words and phrases you can use in a formal letter and which ones you should only use in an informal conversation with your friends.
Using informal language when you are writing a job application, for example, can be very rude and you probably won´t get the job. So always be aware of who you are writing or talking to and what an appropriate register would be, otherwise it could get very embarrassing...
